Katherine Heigl Leaving Grey’s Anatomy

After years of rumored off-screen drama and alleged diva behavior from the cast of Grey’s, Katherine Heigl is finally stepping out on her own for good.

Heigl, 31, has played Dr. Izzie Stephens since the show’s premier six years ago, but says she now wants to focus exclusively on her film career.

Heigl never showed up for shooting on March 1 after taking maternity leave to spend time with her recently adopted daughter, Nayleigh. Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, has released her from her contract, so now all that is left to seal the deal is a final agreement between Heigl’s reps and ABC.

Writing Izzie off the show may be far easier than it has been for other cast mates. Dr. George O’Malley, played by T.R. Knight, suddenly asked to leave the show two years ago after another cast mate, Isaiah Washington, used a homophobic slur about him. The show got rid of both characters. George was killed in a sudden freak accident, but since Izzie was diagnosed with melanoma in previous seasons, her character’s exit has probably been in the cards for some time.
