Recessionista Fashionista: Top 10 Discount Designer Online Stores

Confession: While we are devoted fashionistas, most our “statement pieces” we purchase used from vintage stores and resale stores.  While we’d love to buy everything new and at pre-sale price, that just isn’t in the cards with our limited shopping budgets.

However, one recent phenomena has helped fill our closets with designer goodies–discount designer online stores. Most sites are invitation-only, but getting an invitation isn’t that hard. We just requested an invitation and got it within a couple of days.

One thing we’ve learned from our years of vintage culling–a little patience goes a long way in finding that stunning piece. In the spirit of fashionista generosity, we’ve made a list of our Top 10 Discount Designer Online Stores to help you score that perfect bargain.

10. Editors’ Closet

A solid mix of trendy with straight off the runway couture, Editors’ Closet essentially is what its name says it is: a peek into the closets of some of the most fabulous magazine editors and stylists.

Our current pick on the site: This cute See by Chloe red rose skirt that runs at $57 instead of the usual $466. 70. Perfect for day-to-night-dressing, this skirt is fun, artsy, and sexy.

9. Outnet

Right now, we are totally in love (and avoiding)  Outnet because they are featuring our two favorite designers: Alexander Wang and Alexander McQueen. As evidenced by the caliber of those designers, Outnet has high end designers for much cheaper than their normal price.

Our current pick on the site (and our dream boot) are these stunning zip and tie boots from Alexander Wang. Normally priced at $1,105, these boots go for $497.25 and would be so hot for fall with black tights and a crisp white oxford-style button-up dress.

8. Plndr

A fashion discount store run by the super-hot, youth oriented urban fashion store called Karmaloop, Plndr is all the goodies you’d find on Karmaloop in their final clearance days. Our favorite thing to purchase on Plndr are cute hoodies and t-shirts for working out or lounging that we wouldn’t normally buy because of practicality.

Our current pick on the site: This red Married To The Mob hoodie looks so comfy and bright, we wish we were wearing it right now. And it’s only $20!

7. Refinery Reserve

Run by our favorite fashion blog Refinery 29, Refinery Reserve doesn’t have a lot of deals but they have (in our opinion) the most interestingly curated ones. Usually, instead of buying an actual item, Refinery Reserve offers half-off discounts on “gift certificates” for an online store.

For example, if you purchase a $75 gift certificate for Splendid’s comfy tees, you actually get to spend $150.

6. Ideeli

Being one of the less trafficked discount designer shops, Ideeli always has great items that tend to stay in stock longer than other sites like Gilt Groupe or Swirl. We also love their focus on affordable, trendy basics instead of  impossible to wear couture.

Our current pick on the site: this sparkly almost Betsey Johnson-esque tiger bracelet from Meghan Fabulous. Pair with some jeans, gold sandals, and a white t-shirt and you’ve got a perfect Malibu babe going to the grocery store vibe going on.

5.  Beyond The Rack

Full of a fabulous array of designer steals, day-to-night dresses, and haute accessories, Beyond The Rack keeps the lux the small daily one-off steals rather than making the whole site full of still inaccessible goodies.

However, our current pick on the site is this baby blue Hermes Birkin bag discounted from $21,999 to $16,999. We know it’s still the price of a nice-ish car, but isn’t it cute? Sigh.

4. Rue La La

Full of a plethora of different deals, Rue La La has something for a diverse amounts of budgets, from K-Swiss shoes to diamonds and gold. Of course, our current pick on the site is this expensive (but not as expensive as usual) gold and diamond peace sign necklace from Meira T.

Normally$1,275.00, this necklace runs for $699.90 on Rue La La, which is still out of our budgets, but closer than the original price.

3. Swirl from Daily Candy

With fierce, youthful fashion choices that appeal to the 20-something or 20-something at heart, Swirl by Daily Candy is full of colorful, trendy clothing perfect for day wear. The site is super pretty and even just the graphics make us happy.

Our current pick on the site: This green and pink sundress from Love Token. Green and pink are colors that are said to stimulate the heart and we’ve definitely fallen in love with how cute this dress is.

2. HauteLook

Sometimes we spend an hour in the morning while drinking our morning coffee looking at Hautelook’s iPhone app. Shopping at your fingertips–literally! Dangerous, we know. But Hautelook always has fantastic deals on both designer and mid-level priced items which gives it a diverse appeal for every shopper.

Our current pick on the site: These sassy pink cheetah print pajamas from Bedhead. We all love super nice pajamas but at $138 a pop, they are sort of a luxury/Christmas gift for most. Except for on Hautelook they are selling them for $59.00. Awesome!

1. Gilt Groupe

One of the original of the posh designer discount sites, Gilt Groupe always has amazing deals on clothing, shoes, and accessories we wouldn’t even dare look at in the boutique. They also have clothing for men and kids, travel discounts on classy vacations, and localized deals if you live in a major city.

Our current pick on the site: This gorgeous silk wrap vest from Mason by Michelle Mason. Discounted from $363 to $99, this vest is a great way to spruce up your tired little black dress or skinny jeans and tee combo.
