Mayor Annise Parker announced a deal with Southwest Airlines today that will expand Hobby Airport, allowing for international flights!
The addition of international service at Hobby will mean about 20 more departures daily. As part of the deal, Southwest will cover all costs related to the $100-million expansion, including 5 new gates and a customs facility.
In return for its investment, Southwest will have preferential scheduling rights and pay no rent for its use of four out of the five new international gates. Southwest will also use the customs facility, rent-free.The fifth gate and customs space will be available for use by all other airlines at Hobby, but they will be required to pay rent.
Mayor Annise Parker stated, “From the beginning, I have said that my decision would be based not on what is best for one or another airline, but rather what is best for the city, the local business community and the traveling public. There is no question we have done that.”
Are you excited that Southwest Airlines will now be traveling international??
