The Goo Goo Dolls are set to release “Magnetic” on May 7th and for Rzeznik, it signifies an uplifting and promising time in his life.
Rzeznik, who will be married later this year, talked about his struggles with alcoholism and the fact that he had to make sobriety a choice. “[Drinking] started to get in the way,” Rzeznik said. “You have to admit in your heart of hearts that you’re done with it.”
He then offered a warm and gentle acoustic version of “Rebel Beat”, a song from the forthcoming release. He talked about the songs for “Magnetic” being songs that are upbeat and “represent a time in life where we all are,” Rzeznik added.
He also offered advice to those who are looking to break into the music industry as a musician: “If you are not earning a living [singing and performing] by 30, then just do it for fun,” he said. He also added that the music industry is one that is a changing landscape, one in which digital efforts make an increasing presence and take precedence, according to Rzeznik.
Rzeznik also sang an acoustic version of “Broadway”, a song that was inspired by the neighborhood he grew up in; Rzeznik is from Buffalo, New York.
“Magnetic” will mark the Goo Goo Dolls’ tenth album.
