Chances are you have muddled through your Friday without knowing that this Friday, October the 4th, is one special day: National Taco Day!

Tacos which are one of the most beloved foods here in the United States, are the “…Mexican equivalent of the English word sandwich,” according to the National Taco Day website! “The tortilla, which is made of corn or wheat, is wrapped or folded around a filling that is generally made of spiced proteins such as beef, pork or fish.”

Tacos are enjoyed by many throughout the country with seasoned meats, chicken, beans and seafood, as the “main edible attraction.”

You pair those “attractions” with such garnishes as sour cream, shredded cheeses, onions, salsa, cilantro, avocado, tomatoes, shredded lettuce and anything else you love wrapped around a tortilla or flat bread and you have the makings of hand-held edible bliss!

“For a dish so widely available, the history of the taco is really unknown,” added the National Taco Day website. “But according to taco expert Jeffrey M. Pilcher, the word originates from the silver mines in Mexico in the 18th century, when taco referred to the little explosives workers used to extract the ore.”

So this Friday, stop and smell the tacos (here let me help...click here!) Have one, have two, have many and enjoy a delicacy that can take you to the moon! (No really… for some it can, depending on those garnishes…)
