Hold The Phone! Houston’s Getting ANOTHER New Area Code

When I was younger, I remember asking my dad how Houston had enough phone numbers for everyone who lived here. And that was back when our only area code was 713…

Nowadays, it seems like everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) has some sort of phone, so this comes to no surprise to me that Houston needs some more phone numbers. I mean, we ARE the fourth largest city in the nation…

According to the Chronicle, the original area code was 713. The second, 281, was added in 1997. The city kept growing and a new area code was needed in 1999. The Public Utility Commission of Texas voted to add 832, but decided to require Houstonians to use 10-digit dialing.

346 will be the new area code (starting July 1) because the three existing area codes could run out by October, according to some estimates.

The new area code might not be used immediately, but the PUC said 346 will be ready that day, just in case the other three codes run out.

Hmmmm, what do y’all think of 346??
