Pharrell isn’t the only one who’s expressing some concern over the recent “Blurred Lines” verdict.
Legend tells the news outlet that he, like many, he did hear the similarities between Robin Thicke’s track and Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up”: “I said that when I first heard it, too.” But, he doesn’t agree with the jury who ruled that it was a copy of Gaye’s song.
“You have to be careful when it comes to copyrights,” Legend said, “whether just sounding like or feeling like something is enough to say you violated their copyrights because there’s a lot of music out there, and there’s a lot of things that feel like other things that are influenced by other things. And you don’t want to get into that thing where all of us are suing each other all the time because this and that song feels like another song.”
In the interview, Legend also talked about working with Sam Smith on the charity version of “Lay Me Down.”
