Despite the popular success of Fifty Shades of Grey, both the film and the book, the gossip from behind the scenes paints it as a bit of a mess. Both the director and screenwriter from the first film, Sam Taylor-Johnson and Kelly Marcel respectively, have since departed the franchise.
But Fifty Shades Darker, the second film in the series, which currently not in production while stars Dakota Fanning and Jamie Dornan negotiate their salaries, has secured a new screenwriter: THR reports it’s none other than EL James’ husband, Niall Leonard.
Leonard is a TV script writer, with credits on the UK series Wire in the Blood and Monarch in the Glen, and the author of the Crusher book series.
“Niall is an outstanding writer in his own right, with multiple established credits, and we are lucky to have him join Team Fifty,” producer Michael De Luca told THR in a press statement.
Taylor-Johnson went so far as to call her relationship with James “really, really frustrating” in an interview with THR and Vanity Fair’s behind-the-scenes documentation of the adaptation and filming of Fifty Shades indicates the pair clashed over everything from dialogue to costumes to the sex scenes.
