The fervor and energy under Texas’ Friday Night Lights is intense.
Emotions run high, and at a game in San Antonio this past Friday; those emotions turned into an assault on a game official.
The 4th quarter of the Marble Falls vs. John Jay game was winding down when two John Jay players, sophomore Victor Rojas, No. 12, and No. 81, senior Mike Moreno took aim at football official Robert Watts.
The now viral video shows one player take a running start at Watts’ turned back, taking him down. The other player spears then into him as he lays on the field.
The players were immediately ejected from the game, placed on scholastic and team suspension and may now be facing criminal charges.
In a statement from the secretary of the Austin Football Officials Association, Wayne Elliot; Watts is said to be “very upset” and “wanting to press charges”. He continued by saying; “The first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again.”
It goes without saying that coaches, officials, and the community are horrified by the players actions.
Marble Falls coach Matt Green stated that John Jay’s coach Gary Gutierrez apologized after the game, but has not yet released a statement.
Coach Green was left in shock, saying; “I’ve coached 14 years and I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is leading the academia investigation and released a statement this morning via their Twitter page:
The Marble Falls Police Department is conducting the criminal investigation.
I for one hope that investigation finds them as guilty as it gets and these two are made to submit to several thousand hours of community service and anger management rehab plus of course, being banned from school sponsored sports.
Their actions show a complete lack of respect for authority, team values and personal ethics.
In fact, I wonder just exactly how the John Jay football program is run as 4 OTHER PLAYERS WERE EJECTED FROM THE GAME that night.
This attack was premeditated, brutal and wholly illegal. These players may be considered ‘kids’ but their actions to injure another human on purpose warrant proper and complete repercussions.
