Is Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas a racist? That’s what some people would like you to believe based on a comment he made during a solo show in Melbourne, Australia. Here’s what he said while on stage:
“I keep drinking until I think I’m a black Australian”
Apparently this is highly offensive to indigenous Australian people. Rob admitted to the mistake and explained why he chose that wording on he did on his Facebook.
“I said I drank until I thought I was Australian. Then I drank so much that I thought I was a black Australian and then I drank so much I thought I was a little Australian girl.
“These were 3 things I chose at random to represent 3 things I’m not. I’m not Australian. I’m not black and I’m not a little girl.”
Thomas, went on to say that he sat alone in a dressing room a cried when he found out that his comments had been perceived as racist. That wasn’t good enough for some though, including this fellow artist who didn’t accept the explanation:
Rob stands by his stance that he has been a firm supporter of civil rights for the past 20 years.
So we want to know, what do YOU think?
