Alicia Keys defied our expectations for celebrities when she appeared at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards without a stitch of makeup on—and some haters on the Internet aren’t thrilled about it. Keys’ husband Swizz Beats dropped an Instagram video in response to the backlash, asserting Keys’ freedom to do whatever she damn well pleases.

“Y’all gotta think about that. This is deep,” he says. “Somebody’s sitting at home mad, because somebody didn’t wear makeup on their face… not your face, but they didn’t put makeup on their face, because they just didn’t feel like wearing makeup.”

“But you’re mad because that person didn’t put makeup to please you?,” he continued. “What s— is this? Because you can do whatever you want to do. Think about it… this is deep.”
