Lady Gaga’s new single “Perfect Illusion” swerves firmly into pop-rock territory, and her album will feature one of rock’s reigning goddesses, Florence Welch. The Florence and the Machine frontwoman joined Gaga for a duet which is sure to blend their shared affinities for rock and disco. After Gaga penned the song, she knew exactly who she wanted to join her on the record.

“Me and Florence Welch did a duet together,” Gaga said on BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show. “I started to work on an idea for a song that I really wanted to do with a girl. You’ll see why when you see what the song is about.”

Gaga added, “I just thought, ‘Who do I want to sing with?’ She’s really to me, if not the best, one of the greatest vocalists in the world. She’s incredible.”

During the interview, Gaga also explained that “Perfect Illusion” is a reaction to the artificial media culture that surrounds us.

“I believe many of us are wondering why there are so many fake things around us. How do we navigate through social media?” she said. “How do we look through these images that we know are filtered and altered, and decipher what is reality and what is a perfect illusion?”

On the show, the superstar also met up with Emma Bunton (Baby Spice, now of G.E.M.) to sing a few lines from the Spice Girls classic “2 Become 1.”
